American Tourister's Sustainability PromiseUpdated 28 minutes ago
American Tourister is taking steps to make its products more durable and to incorporate more sustainable materials, while working to reduce its impact on the planet and promote fair and safe working conditions in its supply chain.
As a retailer of American Tourister products, we want to provide clear information about the sustainability commitments and claims made by the brand.
The information below is based on information published by American Tourister. For the latest information, please refer to American Tourister's own sustainability information.
More durable products
American Tourister states that its products undergo rigorous testing for durability and reliability.
The brand says that many of its manufacturing partners have on-site laboratories that conduct quality trials to meet its standards.
Examples of testing carried out include:
Drop testing - luggage is weighted and repeatedly dropped onto its wheels and shell from various heights to assess impact resistance.
Zip testing - zips are opened and closed thousands of times to assess durability.
Wheel testing - suitcases are rolled over rough terrain for extended distances to assess wheel endurance and performance.
Handle testing - shoulder straps, bag handles and pull handles undergo repeated lifting and jerking motions to test their strength and durability.
Temperature and humidity testing - products are exposed to extreme temperatures and humidity to assess their resilience.
Tumble testing - luggage is placed in a rotating machine with wooden and metal obstacles to replicate aspects of real-world baggage handling.
American Tourister also states that it offers repair services in many markets globally, to help customers keep their products in use. Availability of repair services and costs can vary.
Recycled materials
American Tourister states that it is working to incorporate more recycled materials into its luggage and bags.
According to the brand, approximately 45% of American Tourister's net sales in 2025 came from products that incorporated some recycled materials.
The proportion of recycled material varies between products. American Tourister states that, in 2025, the recycled materials incorporated into its products ranged from around 0% to 70% by total product weight.
The brand also states that it is increasing the number of products incorporating recycled materials into key components, including outer shells.
This means that recycled content is not the same across all American Tourister products. Where a particular product contains recycled materials, the product information should be checked for details of which components contain recycled material and the percentage used.
For example, certain current American Tourister products specify recycled content for particular components rather than the product as a whole. The Airconic RPP range, for example, states that its outer shell contains at least 55% recycled polypropylene by weight, while its interior lining and exterior zipper tape contain 100% recycled PET by weight.
Renewable electricity
American Tourister states that it achieved 100% renewable electricity across its owned and operated retail stores, manufacturing and distribution facilities and offices for the first time in 2023.
The brand says this was achieved through a combination of:
On-site solar generation
Participation in green power programmes
Purchasing renewable energy certificates
American Tourister also states that it has on-site solar arrays at its manufacturing facility in Nashik, India, and its distribution centre in Oudenaarde, Belgium.
This statement relates specifically to the owned and operated facilities and electricity use described by American Tourister. It should not be interpreted as meaning that every part of the product's supply chain, manufacture or transportation uses renewable electricity.
More sustainable materials and packaging
American Tourister states that it is working to incorporate more recycled materials into its products as part of its efforts to reduce its footprint.
For packaging, the brand has defined sustainable packaging principles across its organisation. These principles are to:
Reduce material use
Use reusable and recyclable packaging
Prioritise more sustainable materials where possible
American Tourister states that it developed new Sustainable Packaging Guidance in 2025, based on these principles, and that it will continue to roll out and implement the guidance across teams in 2026.
These statements describe American Tourister's approach and ongoing work. They do not mean that every American Tourister product or package is made from recycled materials, or that all packaging is reusable or recyclable.
Ethical working conditions
American Tourister states that it works with its suppliers to promote fair and safe working conditions for people in its supply chain.
The brand says that:
Suppliers of finished goods, as well as certain raw material and component suppliers, are required to sign its Ethical Charter.
Suppliers are expected to extend these expectations throughout their own supply networks.
A subset of suppliers is enrolled in American Tourister's Global Social Compliance Program and is subject to audits.
American Tourister conducts activities such as supplier training to promote understanding of social compliance topics and improve supplier performance in subsequent certification and audits.
These commitments concern social and ethical practices within the supply chain and are separate from claims about the environmental characteristics of individual products.
What do American Tourister's sustainability claims mean?
American Tourister's sustainability information covers a number of different areas, including durability, recycled materials, renewable electricity, packaging and supply-chain practices.
A claim about one of these areas should be understood in the context in which American Tourister makes it.
For example:
A recycled-material claim relates to the specified product or component and the proportion of recycled material stated.
A durability claim relates to the testing and performance of the product.
The renewable-electricity claim relates to the owned and operated facilities specified by American Tourister.
Packaging commitments relate to American Tourister's packaging principles and ongoing implementation.
Ethical Charter and social-compliance statements relate to practices within the supply chain.
These individual claims should not be taken to mean that an American Tourister product is entirely sustainable or that it has no environmental impact.
